Denbaya School and University Programs

Denbaya performers and instructors share the high spirit of multicultural West African drum and dance in our regional schools through all-school assemblies (demonstrations and performances), classroom lessons, and family workshops.  We offer a lively introduction to some of the world's most influential and inspirational music.

Denbaya dancers and drummers work to instill an appreciation for the special rhythms, dances, songs, stories, instruments, and artifacts of West Africa. We bring the culture and its music alive! Using the dynamic medium of polyrhythmic music, we generate enthusiasm for learning about others, foster a wonder in the diversity of human experience, work to eliminate barriers among cultures, and instill the joy of playing and listening to music.

From elementary and secondary schools, to community colleges and major universities, our performing groups and instructors introduce children and adults to cultural experiences they might normally only read about or view passively via the media. We offer an interactive cultural and musical experience that is available nowhere else in the community.

Denbaya easily works within the framework of existing university and school curriculums to enhance educational experience in multiple disciplines. Any school program or lecture demonstration can be tailored to fit your specific classroom needs.

Lessons are flexible and fit well with many subjects ranging from music education, to social sciences, or to black history and African studies. Denbaya can also offer follow-up syllabi and information that will enhance classroom discussion and promote further study after the classroom presentation experience.

All of our school and university programs feature a performance aspect, which demonstrates the music and instruments of West Africa (particularly those related to Guinea which is considered to be the cultural epicenter of this music), and a multi-media lecture presentation on West African musical history, society, and culture.

All programs include audience participation, while special in-depth programs feature a hands-on component where students are given the opportunity to learn a traditional rhythm on provided instruments. In addition to educating students in West African music and culture, the basic Denbaya philosophy of awareness and respect for each other and for our varied cultural identities is re-enforced and celebrated.

Denbaya's instructors are recognized traditional West African artists and/or respected artists, scholars, performers who are dedicated to the serious, in-depth study and practice of this music. All instructors are certified by Denbaya's Artistic Director, Ryan M. Camara and by Company Forè-Foté's master drummer and founder M. Lamine Dibo Camara. Denbaya provides the highest level of professional, in-depth education in West African music, dance, and culture. We encourage intercultural dialogue using the open languages of music and movement. Most of all, learning about this music and about the people of West Africa is fun, joyful, and inspiring!
