Kaya Skye began her lifelong love of African dance at age seven, training with the Cleo Parker African Dance Troupe. She studied Haitian dance in Sante Fe, New Mexico during the early 1990s with Blanche Brown and performed with members of her company. Later, she studied extensively with Master Dancer and former member of the Senegalese National Ballet, Allasane Kane. Kaya first went to Senegal herself in 1996 and danced with the Bakalama Company from Casamance. Kaya spent five years living in Senegal. She now resides in Ashland, Oregon with her three beautiful children. Kaya continues to be with involved in Senegal by supporting midwifery education through her work with the African Birth Collective and the International School of Midwifery. Her involvement in Africa extends to her local clothing and import business, "Afrika’s Rising Children." Kaya’s clear and patient teaching style is very well-suited to beginning dancers, helping them to quickly understand the subtle-nuances of African Dance, while having fun in a supportive community environment. |
